We are a group dedicated to the practice and preservation of capoeira Angola.
Capoeira Angola is an African-Brazilian art form combining fighting techniques and dance movements, ritualized gestures and theatrical improvisations, percussive rhythms and rhythmic songs. Its origins lie among enslaved Africans taken to Brazil who wove elements of the cultures from which they came into a shared response to their oppression during slavery and in its aftermath. This unique expression of past and present struggles for freedom is beautiful to watch and invigorating to play.
We are an affiliate group of the International Capoeira Angola Foundation (ICAF).
Founded and led by Mestre Cobra Mansa, The International Capoeira Angola Foundation (ICAF)
is a non-profit, humanities organization that advocates the practice, maintenance and
growth of the traditional African-Brazilian art form of Capoeira Angola. ICAF sponsors
groups in the United States, Brazil and Europe offering training in the movement, music,
philosophy and spiritual cosmology of Capoeira Angola.
ICAF-Texas was founded as a member of the International Capoeira Angola Foundation in October 1998
from an existing, independent Capoeira Angola study group. The group is under the oversight of
Mestre Jurandir and led by Jon White.
We are a group located in Austin, Texas and a member of the local community.
Our classes form the core of our on-going activities and it is through them that we practice and preserve the traditions we've learned. However, we also recognize the value of community and participate in the life of our community by providing classes, demonstrations and workshops for adults and children.
