- Lesson XIII: Understand functional change and have examples of each type
he discusses (noun to verb, adjective to noun, verb to noun) on hand.
- Lesson XIV: Understand degeneration and elevation of meaning (a.k.a. pejoration
and amelioration) and have an example on hand.
- Lesson XV-XVI: Understand the idea of abstract and concrete nouns, weakening
and hyperbole. Have an example of each on hand.
- Lesson XVII: Learn the examples in this chapter.
- Lesson XVIII-XIX: Understand euphemism, taboo deformation, circumlocution
(a.k.a. Newspeak), and folk etymology and have a few examples of each on hand.
- Lesson XX-XXI: Understand the various categories of clips and blends and
have a few examples on hand.
- Lesson XXII: Understand the concept of doublets and have a couple of examples
on hand. Also review the distinction between cognate and derivative in this
context.
- Lesson XXIII: Be ready to define the words from the sentences in this Lesson
using your knowledge of their bases.
- Lesson XXIV: Understand metathesis and have examples ready. Be ready to
define the words from the sentences in this Lesson using your knowledge of
their bases.
