If you have never used the World Wide Web before, this short introduction will help you navigate through this document.
Please note that this proposal was written for the Netscape or Mosaic environment on a Macintosh with a 832 x 624 24-bit color monitor; if you are using another browser, the document's appearance and some links may differ from their equivalents under Netscape. The suggested style settings are Helvetica font, at 14 point pitch. At this point, Netscape does not support underlining; I hope that a future version will do so.
Using the mouse on the arrows or button in the frame to the right, you can scroll up and down in the documents. For a larger window, pull down the bottom-right corner to the preferred position. To open a second window, direct the cursor to FILE at the top of the screen. Holding down the mouse button, pull down until NEW WINDOW is highlighted; then let go. You can now view two images side-by-side, or read the text in one window, with images, notes or bibliography in the second.
The button bar above this window contains your navigational tools. Use the BACK button to retrace your steps to the previous file or image. Use the HOME button to return to the home page preset in your Preferences; the lion's head icon will return you to the home page of this document, which contains the Table of Contents.
Any image outlined in the link color (usually blue) is HOT -- that is, you can click on it to retrieve a larger, better-quality image. Any text segment marked as a link (usually underlined and blue) is also HOT -- that is, you can click on it to go to an image, to another text segment, or to the textnote or reference indicated. To end this session, direct your cursor to the word FILE at the top of the screen, keeping the mouse button depressed, pull it down to the word QUIT, and let go.
This is a work in progress; please send comments and suggestions to me by e-mail or, if you are using Netscape, use the form provided here.
