![]() This page began as a resource for an undergraduate course on ancient Greek warfare, offered by me in the department of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin for the first time in the spring of 1998. Response from students and from other visitors to the site suggested that it might be useful for this site to have a life of its own. The bulk of the site consists of materials for that course, most of which doubles as reference material for others interested in the subject. A few additions have been made to the course material, and others are planned. Eventually, the site will be restructured so that it is not tied to the ephemera of the spring 1998 offering of the course. For now, the Class Schedule section contains a list of topics covered in the course, with links to reading assingments (which in turn contain links to ancient texts, battle reconstructions, and other resources,) and to the lecture notes, which contain links to other visual material. Please note that the visual material contained on this site is archived here for educational purposes only, and should not be duplicated or used in other contexts. Please also note that my limited time in assembling these resources meant that scans were not particularly polished, and many of them are much larger than they might have been, in order to easily preserve details on, for example, topographical maps and battle plans. As time permits, I'll gradually bring things up to code. Any comments, suggestions, and questions are welcome at rspianka@mail.utexas.edu. |
