Assignment and Study Guide for Week Fifteen (5/4-5/8)

The Coming of Rome

This week we'll look at the Roman domination of the Greek world, focusing again on the major battles involved, after very briefly discussing the more important aspects of the Roman military of the period. We'll also try to take some time on Friday to reflect on the long-term developments we've seen over the course of the semester, and their impact on the future of war in the western world. Don't forget that the second written assignment is due Friday, 5/8.

1. Required readings:

For Monday, please read the Course Reader pp. 109-118 (Cynoscephalae, Thermopylae, and Magnesia)

For Wednesday, please read the Course Reader, pp. 119-128 (Pydna and Sulla's campaigns in Greece)

2. Reccomended reading:

Burn 369-393

3. Suggestions for further study:

In addition to the works in this category from last week's study guide, which cover this period as well (especially Green), E. Gruen's The Hellenistic World and the Coming of Rome 2 vols (Berkeley 1984) is a comprehensive treatment of the period we'll be looking at this week.
