Assignment and Study Guide for Week Ten (3/30-4/3)
The Fourth Century
The Corinthian War, the Second Athenian Sea League, the Hegemony of Thebes
We're going to have to treat the history of the fourth century very briefly (interesting as it may be), focusing as much as possible on specific battles and various military developments rather than a thorough chronology of all political-military events.
1. Required reading:
During the course of the week, please read Hanson 117-193 and Sage 135-161.
For Monday:
Reader, pp. 41-44 (Xenophon Anabasis 1.8 on Cunaxa), with Sage, pp. 153-155.
For Wednesday:
Reader, pp. 45-46 (Xenophon, Hellenica 4.2.14-23 on Nemea).
Reader, pp. 47-49 (Xenophon, Hellenica 4.3.15-23 on Koroneia).
Reader, p. 51 (Charter of the Second Athenian Sea League).
For Friday:
Reader, pp. 59-66 (Xenophon, Hellenica 7.5 and Diodorus Siculus 15.84-87 on Mantinea).
2. Recommended reading:
Burn 305-325.
Xenophon, Hellenica books 3-7. As I mentioned in last week's assignment, the closest thing to an ancient narrative history of the first part of the fourth century is Xenophon's Hellenica. It's well worth consulting if you're interested in the development of this period.
3. Suggestions for further study:
There are plenty of books and articles relevant to military activity in the fourth century. A good general book on the subject is J. K. Anderson, Military Theory and Practice in the Age of Xenophon (Berkeley 1970) U 33 A5 PCL Reserves. Works on more specific topics are available in the class bibliography, and I'm happy to make suggestions on request.
