Assignment and Study Guide for Week Nine (3/23-3/27)

The Peloponnesian War

This week we'll try to finish up the Peloponnesian War, though we might carry over the last few years to the following week. Sorry, lots of reading in Thucydides again (if it's any consoltation, from next week on the reading will be substantially lighter). Be sure to consult the maps in the Course Reader under the 'Peloponnesian War' heading.

Required Reading:

For Monday: Thuc. 5.13-6.52, paying special attention to 5.63-75 (Mantineia) and 6.8-32 (Debate over Sicilian Expedition).

For Wednesday: Thuc. 6.53-7.87, paying special attention to 6.62-72 and 6.94-105 (Athenian successes in Sicily), 7.19-30 (Deceleia), and 7.31-71 (Athenian defeats in Sicily).

For Friday: Thuc. book 8, paying special attention to 8.99-109 (Cynossema); and pp. 25-40 in the Course Reader (Xenophon, Hellenica 1.6.19-1.7 on Arginusae and 2.1.20-2.2 on Aegospotami).

Recommended Reading:

Burn, pp. 280-304.

Xenophon, Hellenica books 1 and 2. Xenophon's work picks up where Thucydides' leaves off, and continues down to 362. It's among the most important sources for that period, and well worth reading. I've excerpted a number of battle accounts in the Course Reader, but haven't required the whole text. If you're interested in reading it, in addition to the on-line version it's available in an inexpensive paperback Penguin edition, under the title A History of My Times, in most bookstores, and a copy is on reserve at PCL.
