This week we'll study the events of the first chapter of the great war between the Athenians and the Peloponnesians, the so-called 'Archidamian War'

Required readings:

Make sure you're keeping up in the Thucydides' readings: I know it's a lot of material, and often difficult to digest, but keep at it. I should make it clear that when I suggest that certain passages should receive special attention, I do not mean to imply that intervening passages can be skipped entirely. You need to read the complete narrative if you expect to keep track of the overall course of the war and understand the various parties and individuals involved. I'm simply calling your attention to specific battle narratives and other passages that I hope you'll look at in particular detail.

For Monday, please read Thuc. 3.1-102, with special attention to 3.1-50 (Mytilene)

For Wednesday, please read Thuc. 3.103-4.74, with special attention to 4.1-41 (Pylos)

For Friday, please read Thuc. 4.75-5.26, with special attention to 4.75-116 (Delium) and 5.1-12 (Amphipolis).
