Hallstatt

Hallstatt on Lake Hallstatt, in Austria: a tiny town perched on the edge of the lake under the "foothills" of the Dachsteingebirge; accessible by a combination of train and ferry across the lake. View from the lake toward the town, the cemetery and salt mines at the level of the mountain valley above, and above that the Plassen (a decent hike).

One generally expects cemeteries to be more or less horizontal. The Hallstatt cemetery, where nearly 1000 early Iron Age graves have been found, approaches the vertical as it rises above the lake toward the salt mines in the shadow of the Plassen. This view was taken from just above the cemetery.

A view of Hallstatt; for those who like to walk and are interested in the geological and cultural history of Europe, the Salzkammergut is a fascinating place to visit. The food isn't bad, either ...
