Basse-Yutz, France.

Basse-Yutz, Moselle.

Two flagons, found together with two bronze stamnoi during road construction, 1927. Find circumstances uncertain; may have been part of a (cremation?) burial, ancient hoard, or secondary deposit. Traces of use, relining, repair.
Bronze, coral and "enamel."
La Tène A; ca. 400 B.C.E.
Flagon 1: Height: 39.65 cm.
British Museum 1929.5-11.1.

[There are better images of this flagon available; I am experimenting with slide-scanning versus flat-bed scanning for best resolution while minimizing glare and half-tone dots. This situation will improve once I am able to take original photographs. However, the problem of any depiction of three-dimensional objects in a two dimensional medium remains painfully acute in the case of an object like this one with its smooth, shiny, convex (and partially concave) surfaces. I am investigating the possibilities of video and/or animation to address these issues.]

Flagon 1 Handle detail

Flagon 2:
Height: 40.6 cm (restored). [No image available yet; please see note on Flagon 1 above. The situation is equally difficult for Flagon 2, which is virtually a double of the first.]

British Museum 1929.5-11.2.

Details:

Throat of Flagon.

Base of Flagon.

Animal on lip.

Top of Flagon with lid.
